Motherhood Monday-Christmas Time

I'm sorry that I missed you for Motherhood Monday, last week.  My only excuse is that it was Christmas Eve, but  I think that is a pretty good excuse.

Baby's first Christmas was as I expected.  He was mostly interested in wrapping paper.  More specifically...eating wrapping paper.  But, he got some great gifts that he is really loving.  I made him a few things.  Unfortunately, I am out of town, and didn't have the forethought to upload pictures before we left.  I will try to give you a post about them later this week.

On another note, I'm have some new plans for this blog for the coming year.  I'm hoping I'm able to be organized enough to actually execute them.

A Tiny Tree for Tiny Hands

I really want to have traditions in our family.  I think traditions really help bring a family closer.  Since it's Baby's first Christmas, I want to go ahead and start some Christmas traditions in our household.

We don't have a glamorous tree.  It doesn't have coordinating ornaments and ribbons, or fancy jewels, or anything like that.  It just has random ornaments that don't really go together, whichever lights we decide we want to use, and candy canes (a tradition that Brandon brought from his childhood).  To be quite honest with you, it's pretty ugly, but I like it that way.  It feels homey.

Motherhood Monday-Wearing me Out!

This kid is wearing me out!  He is into everything, which is both awesome and frustrating.  I LOVE watching him explore and learn and discover, but it sure is tiring (I just had to stop writing mid sentence, since he got his hand stuck in the VCR...yes we still have a VCR).  Anybody feel me?

Check back on Wednesday.  I have a really fun tutorial for you!

Motherhood Monday-Christmas Time

Oops....had this all written up and forgot to post it, yesterday.  Sorry.

Well, Christmas time is here.  It's my little monkey's first!

We went to our local Christmas parade, on a whim, the other night.  It wasn't too exciting, but Baby sure liked it.  He enjoyed the sounds, and the lights, and the flashing blue light on the cop car blocking traffic, nearby.

Healthy Home: Homemade Non-Toxic Cleaners

This Healthy Home post is written by my friend, Tennille, from across the pond.  She comes to us from New South Wales, Australia and is super cool.  This particular topic is something I'm pretty passionate about, and wish I made a little more effort to do this.  Thanks for the awesome info, Tennille!

Motherhood Monday-Finally...Food!

Little Man is finally eating some solids.  I mean...actual solids (why do they call purees solids, anyway?  They are more like...soliquids).  He eats the little biscuit/communion bread type things that I make him (I call them cookies, even though there is no sugar in them), he tried out some broccoli for dinner the other night, and he has eaten a few of those yogurt melty things.  Hooray!  I think my life is about to get a bit simpler...and maybe cheaper?

Enjoying a "cookie."

Speak Nicely

So do you ever wish you were a little bit different?  A little bit better?  I do...a lot.  And this is not like an "I hate my hair" kind of thing.  Like, I truly wish is was genuinely...good.  While I think we need to embrace our individuality and use what God has given us, I also think a little improvement is good, too.  So...at least for a bit, I've decided to invest some time into bettering myself.  If you want to tag along, that would be great.  You can follow my challenges, or come up with your own.

Magnetic Sock Fishing

I'm sorry I missed you for Motherhood Monday, yesterday.  With the holiday, I was so off schedule, I forgot!  But, I have a tutorial for you, today.  It might seem lengthy, but it's just because I gave you lots of photos.  This is perfect if you are looking for something to make for a little girl (or come to think of it, it would be a great boy gift, too)!  Just make sure you pay attention to the age of the child, as there are small components to these and could pose a choking hazard.

Actually Using Pinterest

I hope you are recovering from yesterday!

In the Meantime...Let's Talk About Pinterest

I see complaints a lot about people pinning tons of stuff on Pinterest, but never doing them.  I am here today to tell you...I DO!  And in some ways, it's actually made life simpler.  Need a cute idea for something?  Hey!  I have one filed away, just pick one.

Happy Thanksgiving

I have a lot to be thankful for in my life, but these really top the chart!

My totally sexy husband.  He is so good to me, so fun and silly and never gets the credit he deserves.
He makes me feel like this

My amazingly adorable little man.  I can't even express what this little brings to my life.
Ah!  He's so dang cute!

On another note...I want to instill thankfulness in our everyday lives.  I'm thinking about making this gratitude jar.

Do you have a way to maintain an atmosphere of thanks?

Motherhood Monday-Breakthrough

I feel like we've had a total breakthrough.  Although this is small, and won't seem like anything at all to you, it's a day I've been waiting for.  I wondered when it would ever come.

After being in bed for an hour or two last night, Baby cried.  As I walked into his room, I saw him pick up his paci and put it in his mouth!

Motherhood Monday-A Small Dedication

We had Baby's dedication this weekend.  Normally they are at church, but we had a small dedication outside at Brandon's parents', instead.  Brandon's cousin did that, and I really liked it.  I much prefer a more personal occasion.

Totally Homemade Wreaths

I've done some wreaths, before.  But those wreaths were pre-made items that I simply decorated.  A few weeks ago, I actually made a wreath at a friend's house.
Can you believe that the foundation of this is a wire hanger?  Just twist one into a circle, use some small wire to secure greenery to the circle.  Then use wire or glue to adorn it with whatever items you like.  Easy, and if you use all natural items, it's free(assuming you have a wire hanger)!

Motherhood Monday-Independence

Everyone says Baby looks just like Brandon.  Might be true, but, I don't know how he could be much more like me.  It doesn't seem possible for a person to be both totally dependent and totally independent at the same time.  But, I know there are at least two people like that...me and my son.

At times he wants nothing more than to be held and cuddled and is totally "needy".  But then, turn the page, and he wants total independence.  That is exactly how I am (and have been for much of my life).  Basically, we just want what we want, when we want it.  We want to have things our way.

Shifting Focus

I was raised in a slightly obscure faith.  One that people may have heard of, but often misunderstand.  Even within that faith, I go to a non traditional church.  I am used to people misunderstanding my church or thinking differently than I do.  And that's OK.

Motherhood Monday-The Vaccination Decision

I'm one of those mothers who chose to vaccinate her child.  But on days like today, days where we go to the pediatrician and get 3 shots and my sweet little monkey cries real tears and wimpers for several minutes after I've calmed him down, I wish I wasn't one of those moms.

For this Healthy Home post, my mommy is going to talk to you about Organic food.  She's a pretty awesome lady.  Take a read!

Motherhood Monday- We LOVE Animals!

My sweet boy just loves animals.  I told you before that the little guy totally loves our cats.  Up until now, he hasn't really met our dogs.  I brought him down to meet them a time or two, but he was very little and I was wearing him.  So, they sniffed his head...the end.

We have big dogs, and they don't come in the house much (not at all since Baby was born), and I'd been nervous to have them around him, since they are still somewhat young and very energetic.  But, this weekend, our friend's dog turned 10, and she had a birthday party for her.  Silly?  Yes.  Fun?  Of course!  I really wanted to bring the dogs, since they were in desperate need of some attention and a good outing.

Unfortunately, Baby was sleeping when we took the birthday photos, but here is a party photo, anyhow.

Motherhood Monday-A New Kind of Normal

Life is busy when you are a new mom.  I keep wondering when things are going to get normal, again.  But, then I realize, they won't.  Just like I will never be a teenager, again, I will never not be a mom.  This is my normal.  And I need to embrace it.

Mustache Day

Did you figure out your clue?  Baby was celebrating Mustache Day!

So, I know that mustaches are a little kitsch right now.  Typically, I try to avoid oober trendy things.  But, when one of the silly boys at my office suggested we have a mustache day, I had to get on board.  I love themed things.  It gives me an excuse to be a little creative!

Stay Tuned

I'm working on a craft mini-tutorial for you.  I hope you can see it on Sunday!  In the meantime, check out this hint on what it is.

Clue:  Remember I said CRAFT tutorial.  I will not be telling you how to make cute babies.  This is not the place for that.

Motherhood Tuesday

Sorry I missed you for Motherhood Monday.  Better late than never?

Brandon and I celebrated our anniversary last Friday, so I had my first night away from Baby.  Brandon has had to leave a couple times since Baby was born, so it wasn't a first for him.  But, it was for me.  Luckily, we left him with this lovely lady (aka, my Mommy), so I felt alright about it.

Sock Monkeys

I was recently asked to make some sock monkeys for a monkey themed baby shower.  I made them using this tutorial.

They really weren't difficult, but they are very time consuming.  There is a lot you have to do by hand.  Maybe it was the late night crafting, but these took me about 4 hours a piece.

Try making one and share your photos!

Motherhood Monday-I'm back!

Did you think I'd fallen off the face of the earth?!  Well...if you are a mother (or just a person), you know, that sometimes that happens.

Today I thought I'd just share a few random goings-on in Motherhood.  I don't have any pictures to go with them, so I'll show you some pictures of the beach trip we took a few weeks ago.  I never showed you any, and there are some good ones!

  • Baby got his first two teeth in one week!  He is so cute with his little chompers, but boy are they sharp.  He bit my toe the other night, and it really hurt!

Who doesn't love a good window seat?

Motherhood Monday-Labor Day

For this particular Motherhood Monday (since it is Labor Day), I wanted to tie it to my "Labor Day" with Baby Boy.  But, I couldn't think of much to say.

Oh well.

This particular Labor Day, my sweet boy and I got to enjoy the beach.  I don't have any pictures, since I am not on my computer, and I don't have a fancy phone that can upload pictures.  And even if I did, I forgot my phone at home, anyway.

Healthy Home-Cloth Bum

I started looking into cloth diapering well before I was even pregnant.  I started researching it as a way to save money, but I quickly realized that cloth diapering was good for more than just our financial health.

Here are some important benefits that turned me on to cloth diapering (in no particular order):

Motherhood Monday- Reaching

I don't have much to say, tonight.  But, my sweet boy reached for me to hold him, for the first time, today.  It was so cute and made me feel so good.  I love my little guy!

First Day of School

Today was Brandon's first day of school (he is a PE teacher).  And....it's his first day at his new school.  I wanted to make him a cute Back-To-School gift.  So, Baby and I went to Dollar General to pick up some stuff.

My heart always wants to get silly toys or stickers or something.  But, lets face it, he is a grown man, and doesn't appreciate those things like I do.  So, I got him a big water bottle to keep with him in the gym and some yummy snacks.

Motherhood Monday-Just Look at That Face!

My little man turned 6 months.  I can't believe it.  I told Brandon yesterday, I think this is my favorite stage, yet.
I am just so in love with him.
I mean, look at that face!

New Lock

OK. Aside from some chipping paint, you probably can't tell a difference.  That's because you can't see how I feel about these knobs.

There, does that help?

Motherhood Monday-My Big Boy!

My sweet boy is getting so big.  He is almost sitting up.  He can do it...he just falls over after a little bit.

He's getting much better at his eating, too.  He is finally opening his mouth to take a big bite and eating more and more!  He now eats rice cereal, carrots, squash, and sweet potatoes.  What a big boy!

Motherhood Monday-Taking a Break

I've been feeling a little burned out lately.  I certainly don't want time AWAY from my baby.  I miss him terribly when I'm not with him.  But, a Mommy needs some alone time, every now and then.  Lately, I've been trying to give myself some.  Even if it just means running to the store by myself.

Today, I called my man to let him know I wasn't going to our softball games.  I wasn't feeling well, likely from not getting enough sleep lately.  So, he wonderfully suggested that I go home after work, and he would take the baby and let his mom watch him during his softball game.

I didn't go home and sleep, but I did get some time vegging out in front of the TV, and I intend to go to bed just as soon as my loves get home and my baby is snuggled sweetly in his crib.

Are you a parent?  What do you do when you are in need of a little break?

Motherhood Monday-My Talking Pale Guy

Went to the pediatrician for our 4 month checkup (we are about a month behind...oops).  He told me to be sure to continue using sunscreen, then looked at Baby and called him "Mr. Pale Guy".  Hahaha.  I found so much humor in that, although I certainly can't figure out why he would call him that. :)

Pale?  This guy?

Later that day, Baby started talking a lot and has hardly stopped since.
Man! I love him!!!

Motherhood Monday-Eating and a Bumbo

Sorry I missed you for Motherhood Monday, yesterday.  No worries...I'll fill you in, now.

Baby turned 5 months!  I can't believe it.  It's gone so quickly and so slowly, all at the same time.

We also tried food for the first time.  Granted, it was 1 Tbs of rice cereal to 5 Tbs of milk (I call it Baby Soup), so it wasn't much food...but it was a milestone, nonetheless.  He didn't eat much, which is to be expected.  I need to talk to the pediatrician to figure out how to start incorporating foods the right way, but until then...Look how cute he is with his food face.

I borrowed a Bumbo from a friend, and so far...I think I love it!  Since I borrowed it, yesterday, it has helped me have 2 peaceful(ish) dinners, start a load of laundry, and type this blog post.  Here's Baby helping me write.

"Got writer's block, Mommy?"

Note:  I know....I'm not supposed to put a Bumbo on anything but the floor.  So...don't do that.

Present Parenting

Baby was being fussy.  I found myself sitting on the couch, rocking him back and forth.  I was feeling a tad frustrated.  Brandon looked at me and said (in his baby imitation voice), "I so many love my Mommy".  Then he told me, "You're not going to be able to do that forever."  Wow.  Perspective change.  My moment changed quickly from a time of frustration to a time to cherish.  I don't want to miss these moments that I will soon wish back.

I want to be a present parent.  I want my son to know I am here for him, and that he is my priority.  I want to experience the little moments of his life.  I don't want him to remember me constantly doing.  I want him to remember me constantly being.

How exactly is this accomplished?

~I am so blessed to work at a company that values family and is flexible to accommodate that.  I only go in to the office 3 days a week (I work a few hours from home the other 2, but am mostly just home with Baby).

~When I really need to get stuff done, but Baby really wants me, I wear him and he is typically quite content.

~I just sort of gave up.  I didn't give up being a present parent.  I gave up trying to get it all done.  If Baby wants me, I try to let him have me.  I don't worry quite so much about getting everything else accomplished.  A clean house can wait.

~When I simply can't be right with him (i.e. driving or showering), I try to talk to him or sing to him, if he seems lonely.

~In The Resolution for Women, Priscilla Shirer reflects on the fact that she wishes she had simply enjoyed each stage of her life and her children's lives, rather than wishing and planning for the next "better" stage.  When I find myself hoping for a different stage, I stop myself.  I remember that I don't want to rush Baby's life and I am thrilled with the stage we are in.

I want to be Present.

Motherhood Monday-Baby's New Toy

I promised you a video of Baby's new toy.  Did you make any guesses about what it is?  Yup!  It's a jumper.  He's such an active baby.  He stands in my lap and jumps away.  I knew he needed something like this.  Check him out!

Did you notice the box lid?  He's not tall enough to reach the floor, yet.  :)

P.S.  Any bloggers out there know why my videos always post fuzzy?  It's not fuzzy before I upload it.

Happy Birthday to Me!

Today is my birthday, but we celebrated, yesterday.  It was so much fun!  My mother-in-law made Italian food (my FAVORITE!).  Then, we went outside and played on the slip 'n' slide.
Look at that form!
Even Baby got to play!

Sweet Gifts for a Sweet Girl

Remember the sweet little friend, Baby Boy met in this post?  I made her some gifts before she was born.  Take a look!

Every girl needs little headband, right?  This is just a simple elastic ribbon with some ribbon rosettes that I made.

I made myself one of these hand sanitizer holders for my diaper bag and loved it so much, I made one for this sweet girl (or her Mommy, I guess).  I used this tutorial.

I love making little Bible verse plaques for babies.  They are so fun.  Here's the one I made for this little one.

Cuter Flip Flops

Remember when I told you that I craft with a couple of my old friends, periodically?  We had our first craft day since I had the baby.  We cutified flip flops.  Check em out!

These were $1 flip flops from Dollar General...just plain and basic.  I wrapped them with some ribbon, added some beads, and voila!

I love them!

Motherhood Monday-Swimming is Fun!

This week Baby learned that "swimming" is fun!

I was really surprised that he didn't seem to like the ocean water, while we were at the beach.  The kid loves baths and being outside.  I thought he would love the beach!  But, it was raining a lot, so the water was cold. I blame the cold.

So, I filled our little baby pool with water and let it sit for a while, so the water got warm.  When we first got in, he didn't seem to care.  But, once I showed him that you can use your hand to splash the water....well that opened up a whole new world!  He loved it.

Motherhood Monday-The Beach and Father's Day

Sorry I missed you for Motherhood Monday, last week.  We were spending some family time here:
Unfortunately, Baby didn't particularly like it.  He enjoyed the ocean air, as he LOVES the outdoors.  But, that was about the extent of it.  He didn't like the cold water, he didn't like the sand on his feet, he didn't like the heat.  I really hope he learns to love the beach as he gets older, since Brandon and I possibly love it more than any place on earth.

Summer List

I don't know why, but I normally think it's a little silly to make a physical "bucket list".  But, Trina from Beginner Beans posted about her summer bucket list, and I thought it was a good idea.  I have so many things I constantly have on my brain to do, I can't seem to get any of them done.  So this seemed like a good way to set my focus and actually do some things.

Here's mine:

Motherhood Monday-Baby's New Friend

I'm falling in love with motherhood more and more.  I LOVE it when my sweet boy looks into my eyes and coos or reaches up and touches my face.  It just doesn't get any better.

Over Memorial Day, I went to visit my dear friend, who is also a new mommy.  Baby had his first plane ride.  He did so well!  Minimal fussing, slept through takeoff....awesome!  He also got to make a new friend.  See? Here they are "playing".

Healthy Home-Green Smoothies

My friend Kelli Jo wrote this Healthy Home post for me months ago about green smoothies (note:  she's already had her precious baby, even though she states here that she is pregnant).  Green smoothies always sound a little scary to me, but after looking at these recipes, I think I will have to try one.

What we put into our bodies is certainly an important key to our health.  Check out what Kelli has to say.

Motherhood Monday

Yesterday was my first Mother's Day as a mother!  Because of schedules, we got to start our Mother's Day on Saturday.  We picnicked and hiked.  My favorite way to spend a Sabbath.  Especially when my sweet boy slept for 91/2 hours the night before!

Sunday, I got to go to breakfast with my two favorite men (my husband and my son, if you weren't sure), and go to the local market with my mom.  Pretty good day, in my book!

Rest

"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." Matthew 11:28 (NIV)

by Marcelo Terraza

Rest.  As a new mom, this is something I think about, often.  Especially lately, as I just feel exhausted, through and through.

What do you think God means when he promises rest?  Does he mean physical relief, spiritual respite, emotional calm?  To be honest, maybe he means them all.  But when I think of rest....real rest...the words from this Jennifer Knapp song come to mind.  This is rest.

Baby Gifts

I love making baby gifts.  I recently had a shower to go to and made a couple of things.

First up.....a nursing strap.  I know you have heard of nursing covers.  They are great.  I have 3.  But, because of the boning (or whatever they use) in the top to keep them curved, they are slightly bulky for say...a purse.

This strap is cool because it is small and would fit in your purse.  You just clip it to any blanket, and it turns into a nursing cover.  And let's be honest...if you have a baby, there is going to be a blanket nearby.

You can find the tutorial for this strap, here.  I followed it pretty closely.   I didn't do the top stitching.  I just sewed a tube, then turned it inside out and ironed it.  I also added the adjustable strap piece, to make it adjustable.  Not everyone has the same....nursing height.  :)

Motherhood Monday-Exhausted

It's finally catching up with me.  Motherhood is hard!  I'm exhausted.  I feel like I'm running on empty and can hardly do the bare minimum.  I definitely don't seem to have the time or energy to do anything else.

Brandon laughed at me, tonight, when I drug myself off of the couch and said, "I better pay the car bill before I get too tired to do it."  Really?  Can I really be so tired that it is hard to walk 6 feet to the computer to click a few times and pay my car payment?

Oh well....it's so worth it.

Another Wreath

My brother-in-law and sister-in-law bought their first house!  I made them a little housewarming wreath.

I made the flowers using this tutorial.  I used purple (my sister-in-law's favorite color) and sort of ivory/cream chiffon fabrics.

Motherhood Monday

Life is feeling pretty normal, lately.  I guess that was bound to happen, eventually.  I feel pretty comfortable as a parent.  I don't always know what I'm doing, but I think Brandon and I are doing a pretty good job.

Baby got his shots this week.  We've had nasty diapers, warm foreheads, and fussy times.  The life of a baby is hard.

Contentment

Last week I wrote about "being still".  Part of doing so, is learning contentment.

"Not that I was ever in need, for I have learned how to be content with whatever I have.  I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little." Phillipians 4: 11, 12 (NLT).

Motherhood Monday

It's been a little bit crazy around here.  Life is in full swing.  I've learned a few things, over the past week.

1.)  Going back to work isn't so bad, if you have a great babysitter.

It's amazing the peace of mind I have.  I expected to struggle much more with going back to work. But, I feel so good about the dear friend that I have watching my son, that the transition really wasn't so bad (not to mention my mom watching him once a week).  I think I can do this after all . :)

2.)  Getting things done, just isn't that important.

I found it a bit confusing that Baby seemed fussy for me when we were home, but happy and sleeping all day with Oriona (my awesome babysitter/friend).  When I mentioned it to her, she told me she just liked to hold him all day.  I realized that I'm just trying to get too much done.
The new plan around here is to spend time with my little guy as much as I can, and optimize the time after he goes down to accomplish other things.

    Being Still

"Be still, and know that I am God." (Psalm 46:10)  This is one of my all time favorite Bible passages.  This is a message from God that I yearn to follow, but somehow, always fall short.

I "have" to do the laundry, clean the bathroom, vacuum the floors, run some errands, pull the weeds...the list goes on and on.  Granted, there is nothing wrong with any of these things.  They all have their place.  But where does the priority lie?  Unfortunately, for me, it lies in the doing and buying  and accomplishing.

What I really need to do, is just be.  I need to just be with my family.  I need to just  be with my friends.  I need to be in nature and in God's word.  I need to just be still, and stop worrying about what needs to be done.

I challenge myself to be still this week.  Will you join me?

    Family Organizer

I am guest posting over at Beginner Beans, today.  You should recognize Trina from her Healthy Home Post on simplicity.  I guess, in a way, this organizer is an attempt to simplify a bit in my life.

I am constantly looking for ways to be more organized, but I rarely follow through with them. I have seen tons of weekly planners and menu planners on Pinterest, lately. I made my own.

Go check out my tutorial on Trina's awesome blog, by clicking here!

Healthy Home: Pleasant Surprises Along the Simple Way‏

Healthy Home this month is brought to you by Trina of Beginner Beans.  I am constantly amazed by Trina's ability to live simply.  Simplicity brings many types of health to her home.  Here's what Trina has to say:
