Healthy Family, Healthy Earth

Have you seen No Impact Man?  If you haven't, you should.  I know for a fact it's on Netflix, if you have it.  Anyway, it's a documentary about one family and what they did to live an environmentally impact free lifestyle.  I found it really inspiring.  First of all, I know they saved tons of money.  Secondly, it seemed to bring simplicity back to their lives.  One thing that stood out to me, was a comment that the wife made about not having a TV.  She said the days seemed to last forever.  They would spend time doing things together, instead of watching TV or sitting on their computers.  That is an extremely refreshing concept in our increasingly electronic world.

To be honest, I'm not extremely passionate about saving the earth.  I'm cool with it, but really I care more about the health of my family.  Fortunately, for the earth, things that are healthier for my family, are generally healthier for the earth.

Although I know my self, and my husband, well enough to know that we would not do everything they did (I'm sorry, I just won't be using reusable toilet paper, I just won't), I want to do some things to simplify our lives.

So here is my first step.  I made my own laundry detergent and all-purpose cleaner.  I got the instructions here.  I didn't crunch the numbers, but I know others have, and I'm confident this is saving me money, as well as helping keep chemicals out of my house.

My simple supplies.  I had a hard time finding a vegetable soap, and was disappointed that this one really doesn't smell very good.  But, I'm sure it will be fine.

The finished products.  And I still have lots of supplies left for next time!
I haven't used the laundry detergent, yet, but the all purpose spray seems to work just fine.  You just have to be able to ignore the vinegar smell.  It doesn't stay for long.

  1. Awesome! I'm using Borax for my cloth diapers. Works great every time.
