Maternity Monday: Planning

I don't know why I feel this incredible need to plan.  It's just a part of who I am.  But, especially now, at Christmas, I think about it all, and realize it doesn't matter.  Jesus wasn't born in a location that Mary picked out 5 months in advance.  He didn't have a cute hat or a special blanket that she put on him after his birth (at least not that I know of).  Who knows how long it was before he even arrived back home?  I'm certain he didn't arrive home precisely 2 days after birth, to a newly painted room, a fancy crib, and cute diaper covers.

But, what can I do?  I want to plan.  I want things to be cute.  I guess I just need to keep what's important in perspective.  My baby needs parents to love him, a roof over his head, and food to eat.

That being said.....I've been getting things checked off my list!  I finished the big wall in the nursery, which just about completes my decorating.  I still have a few more finishing touches.

My New Laundry "Room"

I can't believe I haven't posted about this, yet.  I know I told you about my entertainment center redo, but I didn't show you it's new home.

Our laundry area was sort of awful.  It's in the cold, lonely basement.  I let it get very messy, and really let my laundry pile up.

Maternity Monday: Watch What You Say

I started feeling sort of depressed.  I know it's weird, but I figured it was a mix of stress and anxiety over my upcoming childbirth and parenthood, and the lack of crafting I have done, lately.  Everyone needs an outlet, right?

So, I spent my weekend crafting baby crafts.  Got 2 birds with one stone.  Did fun crafts, and got some things accomplished for Baby!  I'll be posting separately about my baby crafting, soon.

On to my thoughts for today:
If you know or will ever know a pregnant woman, LISTEN UP!  I came across this list of things you shouldn't say to pregnant women.  Take a look at it.  It's good (and the real life accounts at the end are funny).

I thought I'd add a few of my own to the list:
  • Constantly asking how she's feeling.  This is just really annoying.
  • DO NOT say that she is gaining weight.  I have had someone tell me this.  There are much politer ways to express that you can see her pregnancy...try "You are starting to show!"  or "Look at your cute belly."  Don't mention her weight.
  • After she's been to the doctor, don't ask how the baby is, or how she is.  I know this seems callous, but there are some pretty private things about pregnancy, and the Mom may not want to discuss this.  Plus, if something is medically wrong with her or her baby, it's unfair to put her in a position where she may feel the need to tell you.  She may not want to, and it's really none of your business.
  • Horror Stories.  OK.  This is an absolute ABSOLUTE no-no.  As if the mom isn't already feeling uneasy enough!  You are simply adding to it by telling her what you probably just view as some crazy story.  To her, it's a view of what could happen to her.  Only talk about positive things regarding pregnancy and childbirth.
  • Medical, nutrition, or physical limitation advice.  Unless she isn't going to the doctor, she has already been told what she needs to be doing or not doing.  Unless she shows desire for your input (or is seriously like smoking pot or something), you "reminding" her is probably going to be viewed as criticism.
  • Reminders of how close her due date is.  If she is at all anxious about giving birth, you are simply making that worse.  Remind her how soon she'll be delivering, only if she verbalizes that she is "just ready to have that baby."
I know you don't know what else to talk to her about (try talking about what you used to talk about, before she was pregnant...she IS the same person, after all), but try.  I honestly feel like some of the worst parts about pregnancy are simply the ridiculous things that people say and do.

Just for good measure...Here's a picture of me and my preggers buddy!  I'm a bit farther along, haha.

Maternity Monday: Feathering the Nest

Sorry I have been sort of MIA.  The holidays and life have kept me pretty busy.  But, here I am in my third trimester.  So far, it's possibly my favorite trimester!  I always heard how miserable it was, but I've had pretty good energy, and actually forgotten that I was pregnant a few times.  Must mean I'm feeling pretty good!

Plus...there's the nesting.  It's awesome!  I went from feeling like I had tons to do in the nursery, to feeling like it's almost done!  I even put up my bookshelves!!

Maternity Monday-Thanksgiving Edition

Let's be honest.  I don't love being pregnant.  I'm thrilled about being a Mommy, but that's pretty much where I draw the line.  Pregnancy is not my favorite thing.

But, in honor of Thanksgiving, I thought I'd make a list of things that are awesome about pregnancy.

Maternity Monday: Beware...This is About Breastfeeding!

I went to a breastfeeding class this week.  It was only $15 at our hospital, and I thought it was totally worth it.  I learned that I have a highly recommended breast pump (thanks to the in-laws).  I learned lots more, too.  Wanna know what I learned?  Here's a few things:

  • Did you know that if a baby is crying to be fed, you probably waited longer than you should?
    • Babies give you other clues that they are hungry and cry as a sort of "last resort"
    • If you wait till they are crying, they may be too frustrated to eat as well as they could
  •  Did you know that breastfeeding lowers your risk (and your child's if it's a girl) of ovarian, breast, and cervical cancers?
    • This means, that my risks have already been lowered because my mom breastfed me (and her mom breastfed her, and I'm quite certain every other woman up the line was breast fed, as well).  Then, I lower it again, by breastfeeding my son.  And one day, if I have a daughter, I lower her risk and any successive girls' risks as well!

My Cake Topper

My friend got married on Sunday.  She found a cake topper on Etsy, and asked me to recreate it for her.  Mine isn't exactly the same as the one online, but I was pretty excited about it.  What do you think?

You really should check out Lint and Lavender on etsy.  They make great stuff.  I thought the price for the cake topper was sorta high...but once I finished mine, I realized that it is a pretty fair price.

Maternity Monday

Funny thing about being pregnant....everyone has their own opinions.  What I should or shouldn't be doing, what I can or can't lift, how active or inactive I should stay....but lately, it's been how big or small I am.

I wouldn't think there would be this much disagreement about something like that.  One minute someone is telling me how big I am, the next, someone tells me I barely look pregnant.  Hmm....I'm huge or tiny...how can I be both?

Luckily, I'm not too sensitive.  I'm just glad you can tell I'm pregnant.  Although, when I look at a picture, taken at an angle like this....I feel huge.
My loving husband just says, "Well, there's a baby in there."  This I know.  But, I'll be happy when it's just the little guy growing, and not me, too.

Beads and Bracelets

I found this tutorial for easy, cute bracelets on my favorite craft blog, I Am Momma-Hear Me Roar.  I decided to make some as gifts for friends.  I made this one with ribbon, instead of leather, like Cheri does.  Not because I thought it was better, but because my beads were too small for the leather string.

Maternity Monday....or...Wednesday-Baby Shower!

I am truly overwhelmed with how blessed we are.  We had our baby shower and were able to stock up on great things!  I feel blessed that my old friend from highschool threw us the shower.  I feel blessed with the gifts we got.  I feel blessed with the amount of people we have in our lives to love our little boy.

 Lots of loot

Maternity Monday...Postponed

I promise I have a Maternity Monday planned for you.  But, had something pressing to do, so it won't be today...Maternity Tuesday or Wednesday, maybe?

Things I Love: Walks

Walks are the best, aren't they?!  They are good for your body and your soul.  I always feel rejuvenated after a walk, outside.  They give me an excuse to see cute animals, breathe in fresh air, or talk with my husband and hold his hand.

I'm trying to convince myself to walk more, while I'm pregnant.  I took a lunch break walk at a local park, today.  Look what I found!
I have no idea what they are.  They were laying underneath a maple tree....anyone know what they are?!  I might dry them and put them in a bowl.  If they aren't poisonous, that is.

"Making" Maternity Pants

I'm a small person, and finding maternity pants that fit me is difficult.  I got sick of looking frumpy in baggy butt jeans, and wanted to look cute, again.  I found this tutorial for making maternity pants out of regular ones.  I followed it with this pair of pants.

Maternity Monday-Free Pictures and a Jazzy Shirt

24 weeks down.  Sheesh, I should stop counting.  It makes delivery day seem all too close.  Scary.

I went to a children's consignment sale, this week.  We have lots of those, around here.  I wasn't that impressed with the sale, but I won a free 1 hour photo shoot!  Of course, I've already put down money for a maternity and a newborn shoot with a different photographer.  But, the certificate I won doesn't expire until next September, so we can schedule a family shoot for next fall.

I jazzed up this maternity shirt during a crafting get together with some friends.

My First Canvas

I consider myself crafty...creative...but not artistic.  Is there a difference?  I feel like there is.

Anyway, my artistic friend had a Bachelorette Party at one of those 'paint a painting while the person shows you what to do' places, this weekend.  I was pretty unsure about it.  I have never painted a picture on canvas before.  We followed an instructor, and just did what she said (or what we felt like doing, if we didn't wanna do it the same).  I mixed mine up a bit, but tried to stick to the basic idea of the picture.
What do you think?  It's nothing wonderful, but for my first canvas, it's not too bad.

Maternity Monday- Charlie's Horses

Done with week 23 and on to 24.  According to this, Baby Boy is the size of a papaya.  Unfortunately, I've never eaten a papaya, so this reference isn't very helpful for me.

Is this accurate?  He feels way bigger!

Anyway, I've been having lots of Charlie Horses.    Luckily, I can feel them coming on, and they go away quickly if I jab my thumb into my calf, fast enough.  Anyone have any other suggestions?

Things I Love: Date Night

I love date night!  It's pretty sad that two people can live in the same house and hardly see each other, but that's what it feels like for us, sometimes.  So, unless there is something that prohibits us, we have a weekly date night.  A lot of the time we just stay in and watch something together, or just go to dinner.  But, sometimes we go crazy and spend the big bucks to see a movie at the theater, or go mini golfing, or something.

I don't care what we do.  It's just nice to have a day where the only thing on my To-Do list is spend time with my husband!

Maternity Monday- Awesome Pants and a Trip to the Hospital

I've decided to start a section on my blog called "Maternity Monday."  I will do my best to post something maternity/pregnancy/baby related each Monday.  I wanted to start this some time ago, but somehow, just never got to it.

So, here we are in week 23.  Sheesh!

Oh, How I Love a Clean House!

I mentioned the other day that I started following the Fly Lady plan.  I'm still following her baby steps, so there isn't a whole lot for me to do each day.  I love that, because it makes it easier to establish habits.  So I didn't have many things to do, today, as far as my baby steps, go.  But, I wanted to get some cleaning/straightening done in the house.
Fly Lady talks about setting a timer and cleaning a room for a set amount of time.  I liked this idea, because I already knew I work well in these situations.  I do well if I have a deadline, and I don't feel overwhelmed if I know there is an end in sight.  So, here's the plan I created for myself, today:

Days Like Today

It's days like today, that I reflect on my life and what I want for myself.

Our pastor read this in church, today, and it really spoke to me.  This is what I want for myself.

"Don't just pretend to love others.  Really love them.  Hate what is wrong.  Hold tightly to what is good.  Love each other with genuine affection, and take delight in honoring each other."
"Be happy with those who are happy, and weep with those who weep.  Live in harmony with each other."
Romans 12:9-10, 15-16a.

Doesn't that just seem like a simpler way to live?  Just love people, and genuinely care about them.  That's it.

What do you want for yourself?

Gender Reveal Party

Well, I'm a couple weeks late, but thought I'd post a few things about our Gender Reveal Party.

We held it at Brandon's parent's house.  They have a great yard, which was perfect for an outdoor party.

The theme for the party was "Dirt & Worms or Glitter & Perms."

Days Like Today

*Sorry for the lack of photos.  For whatever reason, my computer, or my internet, hates me, and won't let me add any more.*

It's days like today, that I reflect on my life and what I want for myself.

I want land for my dogs to run free and my children to safely play.
I want a barn where I can hold barn parties, my animals can take shelter from the weather, and we can "camp out" when we just feel like it.
I want 4 goats and a burrow.
I want the ability to stay home and take care of it all.

Here's to dreamin'!

Things I Love: Fall

While it was in still the 80's yesterday, I can just feel fall coming.  I love the "transition seasons" (at least that's what I call them), and this weather is putting a smile on my face.

Here's what I love about fall:

  • Picnics-My favorite way to have a Sabbath lunch
  • Hiking-My favorite form of exercise.  My dogs love it, too!
  • Camping-As long as I don't have to pee in the woods
  • Smells of Spice Everywhere-People start burning their pumpkin and apple candles...yum!
  • Driving with My Windows Down-  It makes me feel so free!
  • Fairs, Festivals, and Barn Parties-  I wish I went to more of these
  • The Holidays are Around the Corner-This brings out my inner decorator and gives me an excuse to start on making my Christmas gifts.
Don't you just love fall?!

An Entertainment Center Gets a New Life

When we moved into our house, this was in our basement.   It's terribly ugly, in my opinion.  My mom says it looked like it belonged in a home bar.  I'd been using it to store extra food (when I was couponing and had a "stockpile"), cleaning supplies, etc.

But, after a while, I sort of forgot about everything in it and it was just sitting there.  I wanted to use it to make my new laundry area more functional (I will post about that soon).  So I cleaned it out, and primed it.

More Baby Crafts!

I have a friend who is due with her first baby in just a few weeks.  So, of course, I had to make the sweet little bundle something and send it along to Mama.   Take a look!

I made these cute little shoes using the tutorial from this blog.  I had never worked with interfacing, before, but once I figured that out, it was a breeze (aside from the part that I thought I was being "smart" and changed up a step from the tutorial, only to find out, I misunderstood and had to go back to redo it the way it instructed).

Crafting with Friends: Memory Boards

I have a monthly crafting get together with a couple of friends.  It is a great time of gabbing, eating, and crafting together.  It warms my heart and puts a smile on my face.

Our most recent craft...Memory Boards.

Things I Love: My Dogs

I honestly don't know a way to express how much I love my dogs.  I know there are many of you who can relate.  I love my cats, too, but there is something about a dog.  Something about the way they know you and somehow seem to know exactly what you need.  Something about the way they love you, even when you are grumpy or rude or selfish.  I tell my husband all the time that they are what my heart needs, and it's absolutely the truth.

Things I Love: Charcoal Body Wash

I love to use natural products.  They truly do good for my body and soul.

I love Charcoal Body Wash!  Several years ago my mom persuaded me to try some natural face wash to help clear up my acne.  She told me, "All those chemicals can't be good for you."  She was right.  I switched, and my face cleared up a good deal!  But, I still had problems with acne on my chest and back (sorry...TMI?).  That is, until my mommy brought home Collective Wellbeing Charcoal Body Wash.  It cleared my skin right up!  It's not cheap, and so I have strayed many times, trying to save money, assuring myself I've grown out of my acne.  But, within weeks, it always starts coming back, bad.

Unfortunately, they stopped selling this wonderful product at my local health food stores (sad face).  But, I love it so much, I went to their website and paid 26.00 plus shipping and handling for two lovely bottles of this wonderful magic soap.

Crazy Cranes

One of my friends needs 1000 origami cranes for her upcoming wedding.  It's good luck, apparently.  She even had a party for friends to help make some.  Any party that involves crafting is alright in my book!

I came home the other day with a long to do list.  I was tired, stressed, and overwhelmed.  So, I ditched the to do list, and spent my evening watching Netflix and making these!

Although I am far too lazy to take a picture of every step (there are a lot!), you can see the steps with instructions here.  Make some, it's fun!

Healthy Family, Healthy Earth

Have you seen No Impact Man?  If you haven't, you should.  I know for a fact it's on Netflix, if you have it.  Anyway, it's a documentary about one family and what they did to live an environmentally impact free lifestyle.  I found it really inspiring.  First of all, I know they saved tons of money.  Secondly, it seemed to bring simplicity back to their lives.  One thing that stood out to me, was a comment that the wife made about not having a TV.  She said the days seemed to last forever.  They would spend time doing things together, instead of watching TV or sitting on their computers.  That is an extremely refreshing concept in our increasingly electronic world.

To be honest, I'm not extremely passionate about saving the earth.  I'm cool with it, but really I care more about the health of my family.  Fortunately, for the earth, things that are healthier for my family, are generally healthier for the earth.

A Name On It

My dear friend got married last month.  They didn't have a registry, and didn't really need anything.  Hooray!  I good excuse to make something instead.  I much prefer personal gifts, anyway.
I saw this idea online and thought I'd try it for their gift.  Sorry I don't know where I saw it, but there are several resources for etching glass if you google it.

The first thing I did (after I bought a $7 casserole dish at Wally World), was sketch a bunch of  ideas to decide what to put on the thing.

Then, I cut everything out and taped it on the dish to get the right placement.

Who Doesn't Love Free Makeup?!

I went to the Bare Escentuals store at the mall, today, to pick up some more foundation.  If you haven't tried Bare Minerals makeup, you really should.  It's awesome!

Anyway, I just happened to go in during their 35 year birthday celebration.  Look at all the free stuff I got, and I didn't buy any more than what I came for!

I mean, who doesn't love free makeup?!

Finger Fun

I made some finger puppets for my nephew's birthday, several months ago (along with a little carrying bag).

Pottery

I started making pottery at a local rec center, about a year ago.

Here's my first vessels.

Fun with Socks

I had been admiring this book, but couldn't afford it on my minimal budget.  When my mom bought it, I was thrilled and gladly took it over, after informing her that she had bought it for me.

I got the chance to try some of the animals out for my niece's birthday.  A tip for anyone attempting to sew fun things out of socks.....use your zig zag stitch.  If you don't, your machine won't feed the socks through and you will end up sewing a huge knot.  If you don't want to deal with the sock material, I think any of these designs would work just fine using regular fabric.

Here's what I made.  They didn't turn out as cute as in the book, but they were my first try.

Quick Gifts

I made some quick gifts for some birthdays we were celebrating in my Bible study group.  I pulled out some plain votives I had purchased for crafting, my random decorative stuff, and my glue gun to make these.

Oh Baby!

I went to a baby shower, today.  I love being able to go to a shower or party with a gift, without ever going to the store!  I was able to make several things with supplies I already had at home.  Several months ago, the Mommy-To-Be requested that I make her one of my elephants.  So, I knew I was going to make that.  I looked through my things and was able to make a couple more things, as well.

This elephant is especially fun, because of it's textures.  It has a corduroy body, minky ears, silky tail, and well, just regular cotton trunk.

China Cabinet Redo

It's true, I didn't register for China, I knew I wouldn't use it.  But, I love dishes and serve ware and have been wanting a china cabinet.  I was planning on getting rid of my childhood book case, when I  realized I could fix it up and use it for a china cabinet.  Then, I realized, it WAS a china cabinet.  I didn't think of it that way, since it was my book case for as long as I could remember.

My plan was to stain it to keep it looking antique, but I decided to paint it instead.  Staining just seemed too hard, and I had this real desire for it to be a deep black/purple.  Anyway, here it is!

Homemade Christmas

I decided to do a homemade Christmas this year.  It was so much fun to have an excuse to craft, and way less stressful than having to shop for everyone's gifts.  See below for some of it.

 Some jewelry for my girlfriends.

I was really proud of this purse that I made for my soon to be Sister-In-Law.  I just did it off the top of my head.  Pleats and everything.  Guess I'm getting better!

An apron for my step mother.

A blanket for my Bro-In-Law with a woodland themish apartment.

Washcloth puppets and hooded towels for the kiddos.

Another blanket for my Vols fan Father-In-Law.

Pottery for my Mom and PaPa.  I'm still learning, as you can see.
